Siete Foods Latino Heritage Month 2023

This Latino Heritage Month, we are uplifting people who inspire us because Juntos Inspiramos! In honor of our Latino community—past, present, and future—we are celebrating those who inspire us with the hope of inspiring others, too.

We asked inspirational people in our Latino community to share who inspires them.

Read their responses below!

Carla Vernon

Carla Vernon is the first Afro-Latina CEO of a U.S. publicly traded company. She joined Honest as Chief Executive Officer in January 2023, and she has worked at various large companies as well. Her hard work and dedication to not only her career but her family inspires us!

Q: Who inspires you?

A: My inspiration comes from the people who find the positive and the possible no matter how challenging the situation. And these days, my teenage children inspire me. They are both very accomplished athletes, and they push themselves past comfort and ease in order to be even better athletes. They remind me that the ability to move and use my body every day is a gift. And that helps me move past excuses.

Elsa Marie Collins

Elsa Marie Collins is the Co-Founder of This is About Humanity, and she is the founder of The Ideateur, a social impact consultancy business. She advocates for voting, BIPOC, and many social causes by working closely with many different groups like She Se Puede and Voto Latino! Her dedication to making positive change in communities that need it most inspires us.

Q: Who inspires you?

A: Someone who inspires me is my mother who raised me and my four siblings after my dad passed. She's always encouraged us to study and get ahead and work hard, and at the age of 74, she finally became a U.S. citizen! Knowing how important civic duties and engagement is to me, she was excited to finally get to vote. She has not missed an election since!

Julissa Prado

Julissa Prado is the Founder & CEO of Rizos Curls, a line of curly hair care products. Her commitment to using quality, better-for-you ingredients in her hair care products inspires us! We love how she embraces her curls and encourages others to do the same.

Q: Who inspires you?

A: My dad inspires me. He came to this country at 16 and began working in the fields picking oranges. His passion has always been food, and he dreamed of one day owning his own restaurant. I saw him work so hard my entire life working various jobs with no days off. He went from dishwasher to chef and eventually realizing his dream of owning his own restaurant in 2004. Through example he taught me the meaning of hard work, love, family, and always chasing your dreams. My entire life, my dad has always been the kindest, most generous, humble, and attentive father I could ever wish for. He is my biggest inspiration.
