Calabaza en Dulce is a traditional dish often made around Día de los Muertos, or Día de Muertos. Made with pumpkin, piloncillo, and fresh spices, this sweet dish is the perfect fall treat and a great addition to your ofrenda (or "altar"), too. We recommend serving yours with milk or ice cream and topping with our crumbled Grain Free Mexican Shortbread Cookies. ¡Buen Provecho!

Directions

  1. Step 1

Wash the pumpkin well to remove any dirt. Cut the pumpkin in half and scoop out the seeds.
  2. Step 2

Combine the water, piloncillo, orange slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise in a large pot with a lid. Bring mixture to a boil over medium heat, breaking down the piloncillo sugar.
  3. Step 3

    Cut pumpkin into pieces.
  4. Step 4

Add the pumpkin pieces and stir to coat in the syrup. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook covered for about 1 hour, until all pieces of pumpkin can be pierced easily with a fork
  5. Step 5

Increase the heat to medium and cook for another 10-20 minutes to thicken and reduce the syrup
  6. Step 6

Serve the Calabaza en Dulce in a bowl with cold milk on top and crushed shortbread cookies

Calabaza en Dulce, also known as Calabaza en Tacha, is commonly served for Dia de los Muertos. It can also be served with ice cream or whipped cream.
